Behind Creative Mosaics NC

The artist: Sandy Rikoon

I have a long exposure to mosaics as both my parents and grandparents had wonderful colorful mosaic tables in their homes. I never considered producing mosaics myself during my academic training and my many years as a university professor and administrator. Leaving that work several years ago, I decided to combine three of my interests: in traditional arts, in the environment and recycling, and of course my love for mosaics. I started frequenting thrift stores, flea markets, Habitat ReStores, and similar places. I began collecting broken and chipped china and porcelain, older tables that had been discarded or donated, and mosaic glass and ceramic tiles leftover from finished jobs. My thought was to take those tables and to fashion colorful mosaic tops using the the china and porcelain that I would break into small pieces. For my designs, I would largely depend on my knowledge of traditional quilt patterns like the double-wedding ring and log cabin, although I knew I would come up with my own unique style.

Over the years I have experimented with all kinds of tables, designs, and materials. The resulting products are each wholly unique, as it would be impossible to repeat any of these finished works due to their unique combinations of china patterns, tile colors, and table form. My tables are in homes on and on the decks of locations around North Carolina as well as in other states as far away as North Dakota.
